HDB Flats
HDB flats, which basically stands for Housing Development Board, are the cheapest form of rental alternatives in Singapore. There are two options for anyone who wishes to rent these flats. One is by using the open market. The other alternative is by directly renting from the HDB. The latter only works for Singapore citizens due to the eligibility requirements.
When looking for a HDB flat in Singapore, there are some factors to be considered. Location tends to be a major factor. If serene, quiet and peaceful environments is your type, then the East Coast will definitely do the trick. The atmosphere here is nothing like the city where noise and pollution is the order of the day. Adjacent to the Marine Parade is the East Coast Park which has beaches that provide the perfect relaxing points.
There are also areas for those of you who are business-minded, for example, The River Valley, Orchard and Newton. All these areas have re-known business towns not too far away from them. The only disadvantage is that the number of HDB flats here are limited. Therefore, people opt to rent the condos of which costs more as compared to HDB flats.
For the youth at heart, Holland Village is the place to be. It is the home of various restaurants and glitzy clubs which act as entertainment joints.
Apart from location, transportation is another key factor to be considered when looking for a HBD flat in Singapore. Here, the train is the most popular means of transport. Majority of the people use it to move from place to place when going about their day-to-day transactions. Therefore, one has to consider the distance from the HBD to the MRT (Mass Rapid Transit). But, if one owns his or her own car, this does not have to worry them. The HBD flats have got their own reserved parking lots though parking tickets have to be paid for each and every season.
Despite their pocket-friendly prices, quite a number of these flats are old. Due to this, the corridors tend to link up the housing units making privacy a thing of the past. In such cases, corner units tend to be the better option though their prices are higher.
Air-conditioning is a must due to the tropical atmosphere. In some of the old flats, the air-conditioners do not work hence creating an environment that is not fit to live in. Therefore, one has to be keen so as to choose a flat that has a perfect air-conditioning system.
Last but not least, elevators are another issue. I am sure no-one would like to move into a flat whereby it is compulsory to move up and down the stairs every time you leave or enter your house. It tends to be cumbersome especially for the elderly. It is therefore necessary to ensure that the flat has been upgraded and is serviced by the LUP, which stands for Lift Upgrading Program.
In conclusion, looking for a flat may be a long and tiresome process but it is worth it. Be as critical as possible when choosing the flat since it is all for our own good. All the best!
